45 Min Inquiry - Curling

What is the history of curling:
Curling was invented in 1511 by a group of men in Scotland after they decided to take a game that they would sometimes play seriously. They drained a pond and in iced over which is how the playing venue was created. They then had to slide the stone that is made out of river stone as close as they could to the target. The very first club was Kilsyth Curling Club and is still running today.

What Equipment do you need to play curling:
When you play curling you need
- Curling stone. What you slide and try get on the target, Weighs 20kgs
- Curling Broom. These are used to speed up and slow down the stone
- Curling sheet. Sheet with target on it and need to get close to middle
- Curling shoes. Non slip shoes
- Curling gloves. Helps for holding the broom

What are the rules of curling:
In each team you have 4 players, one player slides the stone and two use the brooms, the other players sits out for that slide. Each player gets 2 slides each and they rotate on and off. The stone can hit and move other stones if they are in the way but the players with the broom can not.

What are 2 facts about curling:
- Curling is played at the Winter Olympics
- Both New Zealand Men and Woman go bronze at the last curling meet which was the Pacific-Asia Championship in Shanghai

45 Minute Inquiry - Koi Carp Fishing

Last Saturday Mrs Mills went to Huntley to bow hunt for koi carp. She was hunting them because they are a pest. They eat native fish and their eggs. They pollute the water by stirring up the mud and it kills native trees. Koi carp can grow up to 80cm and can weigh up to 10kg.

Mrs Mills went bow hunting last weekend because the koi carp were spawning (breeding) and they come into the shallows to do this.

Bow hunting is a sport that requires a bow and arrow. You also need a line attached to the arrow so you can retrieve the fish and arrow. You do not need a license in NZ to bow hunt. It has been around since the Victorian era.

Mrs Mills caught 6 koi carp. She didn’t throw them back into the water because you can receive a fine.  She left them on the side of the lake and they were taken by some fishermen.

Beyond the story competition

Our class had to enter a story in a competition called beyond the story. The story had to be about a historic event in New Zealand. I wrote mine about the Aramoana Massacre

Aramoana Massacre: Through Helen Dickson’s Eyes
The sweet and wonderful chirping from the friendly birds outside started my day.
I was hanging out the washing out when my son Jimmy and his little dog Patch came over to help me with some jobs. Later that afternoon a few close, loud bangs went off but Jimmy and I thought it was just some fireworks but know it is a little too early for that so carry on with our jobs. We noticed that Patch had disappeared but just thought he had gone down to the valley for a wander so Jimmy went and looked for him.

After a little while, Jimmy had not returned. I heard some more bangs so ignored what my doctors said a few weeks ago after I got my hip replaced and gabbed my crutches and walked out to the road. I started following the road until it split two ways. I waited until a few more bangs so I would know what way to go. A car raced out from one road and a young man yelled out the window, “There's a mad man with a gun, get out of the way!” After they sped off into the distance a man came out to see what was happening and pointed out a fire upon the hill. He started walking towards it so I followed not knowing what we were walking into.

Loud popping sounds whizzed past us and straight away we realized that someone was shooting at us. The man, who I still didn’t know the name of, stood between me and the shooter and tried to lead me to a safe area when he got shot in the bottom. We both fell over but I managed to land on the grass behind a old phone box that no longer worked. “Ahhhhhhh!” he moaned with pain.
“Are you alright?” I asked cautionary
“Yeah, I’ll be fine,” he answered bravely.
I had dropped my crutches in the middle of the road but did not want to risk crawling back out there in sight of the shooter and the man next to me was in too much pain.

I decided that I had to ring the ambulance and the police so I told the injured man that I was going to try get back to my house. It was slow, long and painful as I tried to crawl into a little ditch next to the road. Once I got in there I followed it along, little bit by little bit I got closer to my house. I stopped for a rest when I heard some more loud gun shots. Finally, I came to the fence outside my house. Using the fence I managed to climb onto my feet and using obstacles around my house I managed to get the my door.

Once inside, I headed straight for the phone and dialed 111. I told them everything that had happened and that a man had been shot. I hung up and started heading back to the injured man to make sure he was alright. I got back to the ditch and couldn’t walk anymore so I had to crawl again back to the phone box and told the injured man that the ambulance and police were coming. We talked for a little bit about our family and I started getting scared about Jimmy not coming back. I decided to go back and try ring them again and did the exact same thing to get back to my house. This time when I rang they told me to lock all the doors and windows and stay in a warm safe place, I argued not wanting to leave him on the road but new it was too dangerous. I grappled a duvet from my bedroom and lied down in the kitchen by the phone and away from sight from any windows. Seconds turned to minutes and minutes turned to hours. I could hear a sound outside and kept and quiet as a mouse lied there hoping it was not the mad shooter. The sound seemed to quiet down I heard scratching at the door and slowly opened it to find patch with blood all over his legs. I gripped him tight, close shooting sounds cracked around me, I hopped this minute would not be my last. The morning came and everything was quit. The police came and told me that the madman was shoot.
His name was David Gray.

Why do bees swam

Today a swam of bees came into our school and made a hive
Our teacher asked us why bees swam.

When queen bees are born they fight and kill each other to be the winner.
Bees swam when two queens bees fight and one escapes and since each queen bee has a special scent of smell 60% of working bees follow.
These bees now need a new place to live, the bees follow the queen and wherever the queen bee lands the rest of the swam will as-well. Sometimes a queen bee may land on a house or car and the rest of the swam will follow and protect the queen. When the bees land they may stay there for many day but usually the queen will move on or some bee keepers will come and collect them.

Norm Hewitt

Today our school went into the gym and had a Norm Hewitt assembly.
Norm was in the All Black and his partner and himself won dancing with the stars in 2005.
Norm talked about SPCA and how animals are one of the family,
He told us that all animals need:
Food & water, Shelter, Exercise, Love, Vet care.
Norm also told us that dreams can come true, when he was seven he said that he wanted to be All Black and twenty years later he was. In one game when the All Blacks were playing England he was asked to lead the haka, during this haka an England player walked up to his face and stared into his eyes.

School Production

From Tuesday night to Thursday night, We had our schools Production that was call "A Most Triumphant Tale" at Baycourt Theater that was written by Carol Story and Jessica Ross. There were five shows. One show on Tuesday Night, one on Wednesday Morning and Night and another one on Thursday Morning and Night.

Mrs Colville choose some students from the student council to welcome everybody when they came through the door and sell programs and I was on of the four kids who did it and Mr Diver brought us a drink and we got to go into the theater for free.

The show was all about two musicians Phil and Ed who were in a rock band called Labyrinth. They were disheartened how another band named One Dimension lip sing all the music they sing. As they get closer to the battle Phil and Ed get deserted by there own team members and were about to give up when Star-man arrives from the future and tells them that they can not give up and must find more band members from the past.

I enjoyed the show a lot and watched the full show 2 time and my favourite part was when Damian (Phil) slow walked along the stage as Liam (Ed) was talking because the sound effects were very cool. I also enjoyed it when they went into the time machines as there was cool sound effects and lighting

and Steam everywhere.

Book Response

Just Tricking

My book is: Just Tricking
The Author is: Andy Griffiths
I chose this book because: It looked very funny

A quick summary of the book:

There are lots of different stories in this book but some were very funny so I will just talk about those.
In one of the stories Andy tries to pretend he is dead so he does not have to go to school but his parents are a step ahead and pretend he is dead and digs a hole and puts Andy in it until Andy stands up and says just tricking but then the parents say that they knew the whole time so Andy was the one who got tricked.

The character of Andy changed by the end of the story because he thought he was tricking them but he got tricked.

An important decision Andy made was to carry on the trick after they started to carry him to the hole.

Book Response

Just Macbeth

My book is: Just Macbeth

A quick summary of the book:

Andy and his friends Danny and Lisa were rehearsing for a play when they suddenly go back in time and Andy becomes a king Lisa Becomes a Queen and Danny Becomes a prince and there are lots of funny things that happen along the way including some very funny pictures.

The story took place in the 1750’s, This was important because the kids had been stuck back in time and there was no technology and very old stuff

The ending stays in your mind because they got put into another time

Book Response

Just Annoying

My book is: Just Annoying
The Author is: Andy Griffiths
I chose this book because: It looked very funny

A quick summary of the book:

There are lots of different stories in this book but some were very funny so I will just talk about those. In one of the stories Andy’s family are going camping, while they are traveling Andy keeps asking if they are there yet and his parents get angry and drop him off and make him walk. In another story Andy likes to swings around on the clothesline in the middle of the night so if his parents have to get a dog that will attack him if he goes by the clothesline.

You could really imagine you were there because the author described the setting well.

I'd like to read other stories by this author because they are funny.

Disaster Writing

FIRE!!!! FIRE!!!! yelled Joe at the top of his voice, “What are you doing” replied Steve flicking his blond hair out of the way of his eyes “Its only a campfire” giggled Tom “But what do we do if it catchers the trees around us on fire”Joe Slowly Replied “Well we will just have keep it little” said Steve’s dad Geoff (One of the most ierer reasonable adults ever) quietly as they were not meant to have fires in the bush, But before they knew it they stocked up the fire so much that massive flames and embers were leaping into the sky sending smoke rising up to the clouds. The sun beamed down on the three kids and lanky adult as Geoff added more wood. The fire got so big that it caught one of the trees on fire and within 20 second the whole tree was in flames, Geoff turned around to see that the three kids were starting to run away and as Geoff was so dumb he just followed them laughing. If you want to know one thing that is the fire in way faster that three fat kids and one uncoordinated adult, and before long of running all four of them came to a stop puffing, but they had to keep moving as the fire was catching from tree to tree and was gaining on the. After another two minutes of running they all collapsed on the ground and the fire caught up to them and they died.

Camp happenings

Camp Happenings

The funniest thing that happened at camp was when the girls screamed really loud in the burma trail from my dad with a chainsaw and the possum that Dylan and Me shoot.
The biggest challenge on camp was trying to climb up and do the four different parts of the high ropes, the vertical playpen, the centipede, the high beam, the posties walk and also trying to get to the top of the rock wall, but I managed to complete all of these, which not many others can do.

The scariest thing that happened on camp was after Ben, Damian and Me taught Felila how to do a backflip on the trampoline, she tried to do one that night but landed on her head and and started screaming and had to wait on the trampoline for a few hours as she could not move until the ambulance came and took her to the hospital.

The most exhausting moment was when Dylan and Me were playing paintball on the same team and we were sneaking up the side of the field and our masked got fogged up and we had to try find our way around without seeing.

The most embarrassing moment was when my dad was being stupid by saying dumb thing to all the girls and they were all laughing at him and me.

The most dangerous moment was after we got back from the bush from our overnight at 5.00am because it was raining, I was so tired that tried to go back to sleep in my cabin and just after I fell asleep Dylan came into my cabin and farted then ditched and I somehow I woke up by the smell and ran into another cabin coughing.

3 things I learnt:
1. How to make a bivouac
2. How to make damper
3. How to do a backflip

2 things I was surprised about:
1. When I woke up in the middle of the night and someone was sleep talking
2. When I got to the top of the vertical playpen

A question I still have:
1. Where are all the eels

Write some Positive and Negative things about Margret Thatcher

A Positive thing about Margaret Thatcher is that she was the first woman to be a Prime Minister of Great Britain. Mrs Thatcher got a degree in chemistry which was very uncommon for a woman in those day. Mrs Thatcher invented whipping ice cream to make soft serve.

A Negative thing about Margaret Thatcher is the she did not help the relations between England and Ireland. Mrs Thatcher didn’t work well with the unions and what she did changed the way the steel industries worked. Mrs Thatcher took away kids getting free milk at school every day.

Who do you find as a leader

Joan Rawnsley

Through my athletics I have meet Joan and I believe that she is a great leader. Even know her children moved on from Children's Athletics 15 years ago she is still involved and loves what she does. Joan gives up a lot of her time to officiate and help us young athletes at competitions. I first remember meeting Joan at Hasting in 2011 when I was 10, she came and helped me set up my blocks for the first time and gave me encouragement, 2 years later She still comes and encourages me whenever She can. When their is a lot of presser Joan copes with it very well and keeps herself and everyone else around her very calm. At Easter when I traveled down to Timaru for Nationals Teams Athletics, Wakatio Bay of Plenty achieved third and she awarded our teams trophies to us as she is Treasurer for New Zealand’s Children’s Athletics.

Extreme adventures Killer Whaler book response

Extreme adventures Killer Whaler

My book is: Extreme adventures Killer Whaler
The Author is: Justin D’ath
I chose this book because: The cover is a big killer Whale almost eating someone, so I wanted to read It to see what happens.

A quick summary of the book :
The book starts with four people in a helicopter, a boy called Sam fox (main character) with his father, brother called Harry and the polit called Ross. They were flying over the Antarctica when they crash on the ice. As the Ice starts to break Sam and his younger brother become separated from the other two. Before long they are standing on a wobble iceberg and just when It seems It can’t get any worse A massive Killer Whale Emerges from the deep, dark sea with huge jaws and rows and rows of enormous teeth.

This book made me think about what would happen If I was in a helicopter and it crashed onto the ice and a killer whale came.

The ending stays in your mind because when a boat comes and picks Sam and Harry up from the iceberg after escaping the killer whale they find out that the boat they get on is a boat that tries to stop people from hunting whales and when the book ends they are still on the boat fighting japanese trying to stop them from shooting a mother and calf swimming in the ocean

A series of unfortunate events book response

A series of unfortunate events

My book is: A series of unfortunate events
The Author is: Lemony Snicket
I chose this book because: Mrs Mills read it to us

A quick summary of the Chapter :

Chose two sentence starters from below to respond to.

This Book made me think about what would happen if my house burnt down and my parents died I would be very scared and would have no idea where I live.

The ending stays in your mind because the kids parents died and their house burnt down and they have to go live with their bank manager and I want to know how they got on.

Our plastic rubbish killing sea life

This article was written by Sophie Barclay and It’s title is: Our plastic rubbish killing sea life
This article is about plastic killing sea life such as Turtles, birds and fish.
Lots of animals are dying because humans can't be bothered walking over to the trash and put in in the bin.
There are huge patches of rubbish all over the pacific ocean and they are very hard to glean up.

1. Return containers for berries, cherry tomatoes, etc. to the farmer’s market to be reused.
2. Make your own snakes
3. Buy reusable plastic bags
4. Have a compost bin
5. Choose reusable sandwich bags
6. Use bar soap instead of bottled liquid soap

7. Don’t use bottled water put water in your drink bottle

8. Give up shampoo in plastic bottles

9. Choose toilet paper thats not wrapped in plastic

10. Use handkerchiefs instead of paper tissues

Conspiracy 365 book response

Conspiracy 365

My book is: Conspiracy 365
The Author is: Gabrielle Lord
I chose this book because: My friend read it and said that it is a very good book so I did.

A quick summary of the book:
Well this story is split into 12 different books and each book is a month EG: January and February so I will just talk about january today.

The books starts with a 15 year old boy called callum who is walking home on new years day when a man comes and warns him that he has 365 day and they have killed his father and he is next!
With that he runs home to find his uncle lying on the floor with blood everywhere and his sister knocked out upstairs, there was somebody else in the house and they were chasing him so he runs to his room and jumps out the window. The police then arrived and blame him for everything that happened. After a few days of hiding around the city he finds out that the city is in lockdown and he is the most wanted person around.

You could really imagine you were there throughout the story as she described everything very well and would make you never want to put down the book.

A tense part of the book was at the start, middle and end of every of the 12 books because callum
(The main character) almost dies or gets caught by the police.
